Canibus vs Dizaster…. Can he bus? No he can’t…

You may or may not know that one of the biggest battles ever took place last night. It’s been hyped for months and we been hyping it as well, it’s sponsored by our friends Planet X Records and they even flew out from Boston to catch the show. The word around the cypher is Canibus choked hard. I think everyone was expecting Bis to drop gems as hes done on dozens of tracks over the years. In my opinion Canibus had a lot riding on this. He’s dropped multiple albums, some classic records, some classic diss tracks, has stolen the show on multiple albums and last night he threw it all away to battle Dizaster of KOTD and failed his peers and fans.

I’m a big fan of Canibus and that can be seen cuz I post his stuff semi regularly. While I’m not a fan of all his shit their is a good chunk of it which I do love, his work with the Lost Boyz is timeless. Last night was just horror show, Canibus started semi strong in the first round with some good lines, some used lines, which had the crowd roaring, and he looked like he was having fun but 3:00 mins into round one he just toppled. One moment the crowd was loving Canibus hanging on every word then all of sudden… Silence. The crowd chanted for him kinda like Ali vs Holmes but this time Holmes hadn’t even fought back yet. What could’ve been another shining moment in a pretty good career turned into a black cloud of shame which I believe won’t leave the realm of Canibus’s head for some time. He even resorted to pulling out the loose leaf and tried to spit off paper which ended ironically in a disaster.

Sadly, I think that was the end of Canibus unless he does another battle for the love. I’m sure it was bittersweet for Dizaster putting the ol’ dog to sleep. I know this post seems like let’s hate Canibus but I don’t  i’ll always check for Canibus material and support whatever he does, and i’ll do my best to try and erase this from the memory banks. But props to him for giving it a go not backing out, and showing up in a sling for some reason. I think many rappers wouldn’t have the guts to do this sort of thing knowing whats on the line especially when you’re a legend but 99% of the dudes from his era wouldn’t be up for the challenge, never mind show up for it. The debate of LL vs Canibus will never end but it’s crystal clear  who won this one. Props to Dizaster.

I guess real rappers bleed in the trenches…. – Canibus KOTD

Review: Attack The Block

image

Attack the Block is a film I’ve had been waiting months to see and it finally arrived in Boston this week. Me and my boy trooped down to the common to check it out last night and damn this was a great a movie! It was straight forward, not a lot of filler and no uneccessary scenes. It was bad ass the whole way thru. I hung on every second of this film and even had me jumping out of my seat a few times. The aliens were incredible and mysterious. One observation about sci fi flicks in general, whenever they wanna show an alien they hype it up and you wait the whole movie and you’re usually bummed by the outcome with some corny alien. Attack the block was different in a sense where the aliens really can’t be seen even when there right on top of you so it always left the mystery kinda wide open yea you know what the aliens look like but you really don’t know.

Well if I were you (reader) id see this movie pronto, I know its not a wide release, but I have a feeling this movie is gonna blow the fuck up via netflix and other online sources. Attack the block I feel will be a household name very soon, and for good reason the movie had it all, and it did it well. Loved the slang in the movie as well reminded of the mid nineties hip hop era in a way, from the dress and the speech it was quite refreshing. Attack the Block was A+ and I suggest you get on it right awayy.

Caligula – Divine Madness (review+goodies)

Caligula

Caligula and I go back many, many years over a decade now that I think about it, reguardless of that I’ll do my best to give an honest opinion of his latest album Divine Madness. A little backstory on Caligula, homies been workin hard and has had his tracks in the ear of some of the undergrounds best. His EP Clone Killers which was highly slept on IMO but for the people who heard it got a lot of love, so much so it landed him on MF Grimms radar signing to DaybyDay Ent. to release his album/mixtape War Games which I don’t think was ever released cuz Daybyday Ent kinda fell off the map which sucks cuz they had a slew of quality joints that got shelved. Fast forward 4-5 years and Caligula is still here and released Divine Madness.

Caligula is a great lyricist and his flow has become more polished and you can easily hear this comparing DM to CK “he’s that Cloverfield beast that overkills MC’s”. The album starts very strong with a track that features Goretex, yes Goretex aka Supercoven of the legendary Non Phixion crew and Gore spits one of his best verses since the NP days we’ve featured this track on the site before. Surprisingly with such a good starting track Caligula manages to keep the bar high throughout the album, consistency is the name of his game and other MC’s should take notice. My man is on that horror, conspiracy, drunken, drugged out, grindhouse film, geurilla politics, style if youre into that stee then Caligula will be in heavy rotation. I mentioned earlier that Gore was on the album but Caligula also brought THUG Angels Hell Razah and Shabazz the Disciple, along with Braggin Rights winner Pumpkinhead, NYC’s Monsta Island Czars yes Monsta Island Czars no shit MEGALON is on a track!!!, the homie Scottie Blunts (peace to cakevsalex/weathermania boards) and a couple other heads you might know.

Caligulas beat selection is wonderful, rugged shit, head knod shit, sock a puppy in the face joints. The instrumentals are on that underground gutter vibe, if youre looking for the next Lil’ John you’re not going to find it here, but if you want ill Caligula (Malcolm McDowell) samples, dirty drums, filthy horns, ill piano, organ, and string loops that you can wet a whole block up to then, this is for you. I love how the Caligulanity Remix made it to the album cuz I always loved it and even featured it on the site before in the past. 16 tracks are on the album and seriously it’s all good. Caligula is raw, he’s that raw that’s been missing for quite a while in hip-hop, few  can still do it like this. The grittiness and graniness on the album most would be afraid to approach but homie embraces it and you can feel it till the last line on the album. “It gets harder to deal im afraid to remain sober and never release the steel till it’s game over”  as well as the outro sounding like a cowboy riding his horse alone into the desert waiting for the next adventure to begin or in Caligulas case his next album.

The rawness of his voice and recordings are outstanding and it’s the way I like to hear my shit, it’s like finding a an artifact. Caligula still does it better than most and if youre unfamiliar with the mans work this is a great place to start and get familar with the guys work. You can BUY Divine Madness NOW!!

80 Blocks From Tiffanys (review)

80 Blocks

80 Blocks From Tiffanys is one of the realest documentaries I’ve ever seen. The setting is late 70’s early 80’s, in NYC’s South Bronx when shit was beyond real. This film is basically an uncovered gem that is finally getting an official release.  This DVD shows the streets of NYC… the old streets of NYC… the NYC thats trying to be forgotten. Jon Bradshaw wrote a piece on the gangs The Savage Skulls, and The Savage Nomads for Esquire magazine in the late 70’s. Gary Weiss who used to work for Saturday Night Live decided to make a documentary on the gangs for NBC after reading the article and its included in the DVD release and is seriously an amazing piece.

I think to the regular Joe, the documenty may seem barbaric and the Nomads and Skulls perhaps live up to the name Savage, but in my opinion and what is most prominent is the brotherhood. These guys were a family, they had each others back when the rest of the society turned their backs on them. They didn’t care what sex you were, or what color your skin was, I think they said, if you wanted to be down they didnt discriminate. From homicide, rape, theft, assault, breaking and entering The Savage Nomads rounded every base in societys underbelly, but at the same time, it showed growth. Blackie an ex-gang member got his life together after having a wife and child and in his own words “going to jail too much.”

The film is gritty, the sound is harsh, the film as a whole raw. The style was original and the people were more tan interesting, people talk about reality TV nowadays… This is reality TV in its purest form. Another real cool thing about this film it shows some of earl;iest footage of hip-hop in a block party where you even hear the classic mic check and Frankie Dee spinning wax 2 turntables a mic and a mixer and even a YES YES YALL!! Check this out ASAP if you cant wait they have copies of the VHS on AMAZON going for $150, or you can get this incredible DVD with a hardcover booklet of the Esquire Magazine article and an amazing painting on Novemeber 23rd via AMAZON.
