Willy Santos in Ravers

While I havent stepped on a skateboard in the better part of 15 years my respect for skaters and the craft run very deep. I can still talk about skating with some of my pals, and I can drop knowledge on youngsters about some of the greats of the early days of street skating. Hell, if I really wanted, I’m sure I could step back on my board and bust out a trick or two. When I started skating in 1990 street skating was just coming in but sadly skating was on the decline then, although I was oblivious. The boards with noses started popping up, later on came slick boards for sliding, and the rest is history. When I think of skaters from that era names that come to mind are, Jason Rodgers, Jeremy Klein, Frankie Hill, Guy Mariano, Natas, Danny Way, Lance Mountain, Mike Carrol and one of my personal favorites Willy Santos.

When I first saw Ravers my boy gave it to me on tape, he also gave me a Willy Santos shirt. The shirt was doo-doo brown and it had two designs on it, one on the inside left of the shirt, I believe it said Willy or Santos. On the other side it was some sort of cartoon charachter. It was the ugliest shirt known to man, but I loved it. Let’s not forget the video, the video was incredible. I read that it came out in 93 but if my memory serves me correct, I moved from Cali to Boston in 92… So I’m in quite a pickle on the true date of this one. Unless I had some underground shit? Which is likely cuz we did know some kids that were signed to Black Label back then, one of them I gave a thrashing to in boxing match, which was fun.

Willy Santos set was very memorable to me for a few reasons, 1st his song arrangement. The Beatles Yellow Submarine and Here Comes the Sun are one of the main reasons I remember the video. The songs were so out of place at the time, along with a lot of music on that video. Back then you’d hear Public Enemy and punk songs etc. but for Willy to be killin’ it while The Beatles were playing was just awesome. His style was just sick and he rode too well, just wicked fluid. Willy was so slept on and was he Mexican? Was he Asian? We never knew, but he was different and on another level of skating back then and thats all that mattered.

Ive included 2 videos of Willy Santos in Ravers. One video is good quality and is only about half of Willy’s set. The 2nd video is bad quality but contains the full segment with both songs. The Deck that Willy’s holding is one of my favorite Decks of all time, and was circled many times in my CCS catalogue, LOL. I believe it dropped for the Ravers video, hence The Beatles Yellow Submarine. I wanna say peace to Willy Santos for taking the time out to answer a question for me about the video, it’s dope he’ll answer to fans. It’s crazy how a 4 minute video from almost 20 years ago can have such an impact on someone and I’m sure I’m not alone.
