Is John Calipari a cheater?

The University of Memphis is being forced to forfeit its 07-08 season in which they won an NCAA record 38 games.  Granted, they don’t play in the toughest division, but they made it all the way through the tournament only to lose in the championship game in overtime.  Word on the street is, Derrick Rose, the teams best player at the time, had someone else take his SAT test for him.  After failing the ACT three times and possibly not being eligible for the upcoming season, mysteriously an acceptable score was obtained.  On top of that, the school gave Rose’s brother something around the $1,700 in traveling expenses so he could travel with the team.

This all sounds eerily similar to our very own UMass basketball team from the 95-96 season.  I remember watching this team all season shocked that a squad from UMass was making serious moves.  They were ranked number one for the first time in school history and went all the way to the final four, but lost to Kentucky.  Marcus Camby was the star of the team then but with a supporting cast of Lou Roe, Edgar Padillia, Carmello Travieso, Tyrone Weeks, Derrick Kellog, Donta Bright, Dana Dingle how can you go wrong.  This season was later vacated also because Marcus Camby admitted to accepting some $28,000 from agents while still in school.  For the record, I see nothing wrong with college players getting paid.  The schools make so much money when their athletic programs do well, so why shouldn’t the players be compensated?  Camby later reimbursed the school for the $151,617 in lost revenue.

Which brings me full circle back to Coach John Calipari.  Sure he left UMass for the NBA immediately after that final four season, but thats only because the New Jersey Nets were offering big bucks.  He was paid 3 million dollars a year which in 97 was a boat load for a coach.  The decision had nothing to due with the NCAA launching an investigation into wrongdoings at UMass.  After about three seasons the Nets fired Calipari.  Now with the Memphis situation, how was the coach supposed to know his star player was a dum dum?  Or that there was something wrong with Rose’s brother having enough funds be everywhere the team was going to be.  That doesn’t explain why Coach Calipari would suddenly jump ship from Memphis, a school he brought back from obscurity, to become head coach at neighboring Kentucky.  With the Kentucky job comes a lot more pressure.  Memphis had some of the top recruits in the country already committed to the team, who have since rescinded their commitments since the man who recruited them now isn’t going to be there.  Maybe the coach knew something we didn’t.

Plaxico agrees to prison

Former NY Giants wide receiver, Plaxico Burress entered a guilty plea yesterday, which is expected to come with a two year prison term.  I agree that what the man did was wrong, but two years wrong?  I think not.  The problem with Plaxico, (besides his stupidity) is that this all happened in New York.  The gun laws are a lot more strict in New York City than almost anywhere else in the country.  If you really think about it, Plaxico is a victim of geography

Plaxico’s former team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, were invited to shoot guns with the state police.  Photos surfaced of current and former Steelers players firing guns and posing with them.  The state police has said that no laws were broken and everyone was safe.  Yet there have been allegations that the weapons were from the evidence room and the ammunition was from the state police barracks.  No formal charges have been filed.

In Florida, this offseason, NFL wide receiver Donte Stallworth killed a pedestrian while driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana.  He pled guilty to vehicular manslaughter was sentanced to 30 days in prison, and served 24 before being released.  The NFL has suspended Stallworth for the entire season, even though the judge is allowing him to work out while on house arrest.  I think the NFL realizes that judge may not be the wisest person to hear a case.

Favre makes me think of Tyra Banks

First of all I must preface this post by telling everyone that I am a huge football fan, and possibly more of a Howard Stern fan.  Allow me to start with the football aspect.

Once again Brett Favre came out of retirement.  This time he signed with the Minnesota Vikings, arch rivals to the Green Bay Packers, but says its not personal.  I don’t know if I’m on my own here, but, I’m sick of this isht!  This guy gave himself a deadline a month and a half ago.  Not to shut the media up, but so that, just in case, he decided not to play, the Vikings would have enough time to figure out their quarterback situation.  How thoughtful.  Fast forward to mid August, and guess who decides he wants to play again.  I wish Reggie White would come back from the dead and Joe Thiesmann that herb.  Google Joe Theismann LT if you’re confused.

Which brings me to the Stern show.  For a long time Howard has played clips from the Tyra Banks talk show to point out the awfulness.  One clip was from some fakakta “so what” campaign.  This was to help women feel better about themselves, and not be all self conscious.  Everyone in the audience had their weight written on their shirts and after shouting it out they would say “So What.”  Whatever,  I guess I’m all right with that.  The magic of this was after that day, the great Fred Norris will play Tyra Banks yelling “So What!” during inappropriate moments.

When Brett Favre had that situation in Green Bay and felt he got disrespected, I was intrigued, because he ended up on a team that the Pats play twice a year.  If he had gone to the Houston Texans, I would have said, So What.  F him.  By the way, the Packers drafted a quarterback years prior to this to replace Favre, who at the time was cool with that.  Fast forward again and sour puss has an issue.  Now that the Jets have told him to get lost, I don’t care about him again.  I would like you all to join me in my own campaign.  If you ever see Brett Favre on the streets or on tv, just look at him and say, Tyra Banks!
